What is Body Mass Index(BMI)?

BMI or body mass index is a test used by doctors to define if a person is a healthy weight. A healthy BMI is in the range of 19-25.

Candidates for weight loss surgery must have a BMI of 30+. A BMI of 40 is classified as morbidly obese and will cause obesity related health problems.

To calculate your BMI, use these formulas:

(Metric): Weight (kg) / Height x Height (m)

(Imperial): Weight (lb) / Height x Height (inches)   x  703

Body mass index is not the only indicator of obesity. The measurement of a persons waist is just as important. A healthy waist measurement is less than 32 inches or 80 cm for women and 37 inches or 94 cm for men.
