Do I need extra vitamins post-Gastric Bypass surgery?

All patients who undergo weight loss surgeries such as Gastric bypass are at risk of nutritional deficiencies as the body absorbs fewer nutrients from food.

Bariatric surgeons will advise patients on the correct diet to follow after gastric bypass surgery to avoid vitamin deficiencies.

Vitamins are often prescribed by your surgeon to prevent any nutritional deficiencies occuring. It is generally recommended that gastric bypass patients take vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and calcium supplements after surgery and some patients may need iron tablets to prevent anaemia as it can be difficult for the body to absorb iron from food efficiently.
